Packing and Paperwork: What to Carry for Vietnamese Immigration

A short, practical list of what should be in your hand luggage rather than your suitcase when you land in Vietnam.

Nothing on this list is exotic. The point is where it lives — accessible, not packed at the bottom of a checked bag.

In your hand luggage

  • Your passport, valid at least six months beyond arrival
  • Two printed copies of the approved e-visa
  • Proof of onward travel — airlines check this at departure
  • Your first night’s accommodation booking with the address
  • Travel insurance details

On your phone, offline

Save a PDF of the visa, the hotel address in Vietnamese, and a screenshot of your booking confirmations. Airport wifi is not something to depend on after a long flight.

Cash

Carry a small amount of local currency for the taxi and the first day. Declare amounts above the published threshold at customs.

What not to bother with

You do not need printed bank statements or an itinerary for a standard tourist entry. Keep the pack small enough that you can find everything one-handed at the counter.
